Device (Concept)
WHAT: A redesigned boombox for Generation X (this was in 1997). The units lock together through grooves in the sides, and a propeller handle gathers them together for carrying. WHY: I researched existing models of portable stereos in stores and catalogues and found them to be in stark contrast to the music they were designed to play: the flashier models targeted towards the youth market were all of a similar shape and design, and not much had been done to distinguish one from the other. The pop-cultural research I did found that the music of the day (1997), "Alternative Rock", was spearheading a shift in popularity for fashion and attitudes "outside the mainstream". With music as perhaps the most important art form within youth culture, I thought that not only should the casing be interesting and fresh, but the functionality should reflect the more sophisticated expectations of a generation raised on digital music. To that end, I developed several drafts of ideas, deciding on a model I dubbed "Triplet" for its ability to separate into three separate units. Detachable notches allowed the user to spread out the speakers for a wider range of sound delivery, and its spherical design was both fresh and unusual. previous next |
